You want to change the work you do at your company or even leave your job for another. Do you have to wait until pain pushes you to act? Recognize the catalysts of Fallacy and Fantasy and how they can help you see your future change and bring it about.
There are costs to indecision, procrastination and fear. Loss of energy, loss of time, loss of passion - all of which result in delay in reaching goals. Positive change can be expedited with the resources you already have available that you can put to better use.
While vision imagines the future you want to have, the Future-sees stage is where you extend your creative energy outward to your vision and it is drawn towards you. Combined with your physical actions, it manifests your dream. Psychologist and author Wayne Dyer, talks of how you use your power, strength of will and clear mental pictures to create a thought that allows things to be attracted to you. One or both of the stages below can facilitate this power.
Fallacies
Whether people or projects, you are certain the issues you have with these can’t be resolved and you feel your potential’s exhausted. You may want to get out from under the pressure of others you don’t feel a fit with, projects you don’t want to do, or changes at work you feel threaten your job security. While your thoughts and feelings deserve notice, your conclusion that something is wrong and not improvable is an erroneous belief. If you doubt this, think of a time when you or someone you know left a job, yet the replacement did well. Nevertheless, your misleading notion can cause you to review what’s not working, fuel and interest in change, and prepare you for the Future-sees stage.
- Resolve to view your current situation from a 3600 view. Assign yourself a
timeline in which you’ll test and reexamine your methods of operation.
- Think of someone outside your company, whose work style you respect and see them in your place. Would they stand in the fire longer to become strong as tempered-steel, or when they break a sweat or get burned would they move to a cooler place? Seek their mentorship for the changes you’d like to make and secure their confidentiality.
- Want to take things off your plate? Start with brainstorming a solution for how your work will still get done if you don’t do it, or how it can get done in less time without your taking on another project to fill the void. Want more challenge? Consider how you will adjust your workload and behaviors to ready yourself.
- Use trusted support from someone who will discuss your work scenario and
where things fall short. Brainstorm on possible new outcomes. If your support person has your best interests at heart, then they can help you determine whether your goal sounds worthy and offer feedback if you’re a good fit for the task.
If this review approach doesn’t turn your fallacy on end, renew your spirit before you begin to research new business environments to welcome your talents. How do you figure out what you want and build momentum to get there?
Fantasies
Fantasizing gives flight to your desires, as you daydream different scenarios and myriad options. The beauty and freedom of feeding your wild thoughts is you don’t need to act on them – they can lay dormant forever. Your whims are seeds dotting the field of your playful imagination. But they can also stir emotions that strengthen your resolve for change, prepare you for bigger challenges and grow your idea to a useable form in the Future-sees stage.
- Envision your current job and everyone happy in the kingdom. If there is any
problem, then you quickly step in and eradicate it. You’re a proud knight, gleaming in your armor, as you give your all. Others treat you with respect for your courage and strengths. OR
- Imagine yourself a galaxy traveler, speeding along in your comfortable space
ship, free to shape your own destiny wherever you go, belonging to no ruling order. You dress as you please, go where you want, yet continue to offer your bold and innovative leadership approaches to mutual satisfaction. OR
- You lay claim to a great inheritance that frees you from the work-for-a-living
world. With your ability to work or not, you volunteer your assistance in projects that make a dynamic world impact or help your favorite charity, anonymously or with great flair.
Your daydreams are yours alone, so there is no need to censor healthy, mental wanderings. Allow yourself to explore fully ideas that give you pleasure and try out possible futures. This adventurous phase is where you rekindle your passions, invite in new potential and lay the groundwork for action.
- Consider if changing any part of your situation would satisfy your needs or if it is an all-or-nothing venture you’re after. Your conclusion will help boost your confidence to take corrective actions where you are or face new challenges somewhere else.
- Demonstrate your eagerness and professionalism for new assignments by
handling well what you already have in front of you. Investigate all possible current options for the type of work you’d like to do.
- Talk with your Supervisor about your interest in taking on more or, if you decided to take things off your plate, communicate your idea so this change will be a recognizable benefit for the company and you will still do your work, but with renewed energy.
Future-sees
Having entered this portal through Fallacy, Fantasy or both, you feel more determined to make changes. Your vision of the goal has crystallized. Focus your attention on a specific goal with non-forced concentration and dedication. Your mantra may be, “It is meant to be mine and so it is.” This confident stance will direct you to plan development and focused actions.
Give yourself time to review your situation without considering someone or something as a fallacy and use fantasy to regain a lighter attitude. You might need time off to do a thorough job of refueling, to catch sight of the dream you want, and commit to the actions to take you there. If you still want to leave your job, then ask yourself if you’re ready to embrace a new outlook and be challenged in new ways.
“It often takes months of time and effort to find a job that matches your qualifications,” according to the U.S. Dept. of Labor. But it doesn’t have to take that long, not if you pay attention to the Fallacy, Fantasy and Future-see stages that can help ground your decision, get you in action and cause the positive results you’re after.
As the mid-20th century American philosophers Harburg and Arlen said, "The dreams that you dare to dream really do come true."
