The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports an increase in the need of teachers, and, despite recent difficult economic times, more financial professionals such as auditors and accountants.  Due to the baby boomers aging, health care will be expanding even more.  So look for industries that are growing and keep on top of your skills so you are eligible for new open positions.

Staying Insured After Job Loss

1. Try to join your husband's plan (typically less expensive than COBRA).
2. See if your children can be covered under public health programs such as Medicaid or SCHIP, the state's health insurance plans.  To check out qualification, go to: www.healthfamilies.ca.gov or call (800) 880-5300.
3. Look for options other than COBRA, which can be costly.  However if it's your best option, you can also look into extending it beyond the basic coverage period.
4. Visit ehealthinsurance.com for options cheaper than COBRA.
5. If your best option is to sign up for COBRA, be sure to do it within 60-days from receiving your letter from your employer that you're eligible for it.
6. President Obama's new health plan may change healthcare options and coverage, but meanwhile...
7. Don't go without healthcare coverage.  Contact the California Primary Care Association (888) 895-0808 or go to www.cpca.org for referrals to community centers and clinics.  They offer free or sliding scale rates.
